Athleta is a women’s fitness clothing company that creates activewear for various activities from running and training, to hiking and yoga. The clothing brand offers all things fitness from workout clothes to swimwear- including comfortable high-performance clothing for work! But who is Athleta, the brand?

Athleta is a community-conscious brand that has cultivated a culture of women empowerment by creating products that aim to represent all women.

When Athleta isn’t nurturing the spirit of solidarity by hosting community workout classes, the brand dedicates its time to save the planet recycling used plastic bottles to produce high-performance activewear.

One of the many things that I love about Athleta is that they always have a decent range of quality items to choose from (although this made it difficult to decide which collection to review). After looking through the website, I found that the Supersonic, a newer fabric, is billed as the most eco-friendly of the Athleta high-performance fabrics, so I decided to get them.

There are few activewear brands that I can justify spending my life savings on (think Lululemon and Alo Yoga), and Athleta is one of them. This Athleta review comes with a hefty $150 price tag, so if you’re on the fence about splurging on some Athleta activewear, I hope this is helpful to you!

Athleta sports bra review

Description: Athleta Lightning Tight In Supersonic

The Athleta Lightning Tight in Supersonic is a high rise legging designed “for long-distance, short distance, and trail running.”

The Lightning Tight is designed for breathability with mesh panels that run down the leg to keep you cool during your sweat-sesh. Also, the Lightning tight is fitted with a lined triangular gusset for added range of motion.

The waistband is made from the same fabric but doubled, which makes it quite thick and compressive. But if you need the extra hold, there is a string of elastic looped through the waist to help tighten the fit.

Ladies, you’ll be happy to know that these leggings can hold your entire purse- pockets galore! There are two hidden pockets in the front sides of the waistband; two deeper pockets on each leg; and one zippered pocket right at the back.

I doubt these leggings pockets can hold your whole life because of how lightweight they are, but they’ll give you multiple options to stash your stuff.

Squatproof? Check! These Athleta Lightning Tights will not let your tush see the light of day. However, the fabric is quite thin, and panty lines might peak through, so I strongly suggest wearing seamless underwear underneath your Lightning Tights.

But if you’re like me, and you have zero-tolerance for panty lines, going commando under your leggings might be your best bet.

Booty-sculpting? Nope! If I’m being honest, these leggings do nothing for my butt. The waistband cuts through my backside and flattens out my booty.

Athleta Run Free Sports Bra In Supersonic

The Athleta Run Free sports bra is true to its name, so no need to worry about your boob bouncing and spilling out because this bra will hold you down. Note: the underband is super tight; brace yourself because it will be a struggle to get in and out of the bra, but the support makes it worth it!

The Run Free bra is designed “for short and middle distance running, training and medium impact workouts.” The asymmetrical straps and crisscross back add some edge to this super functional bra.

What I Loved

In my opinion, the drawstrings and pockets are the highlight of the Athleta Lightning leggings. I also love the breathable mesh panels built into the lower leg.

Athleta Supersonic Sizing Review

After checking out the Athleta size chart, I bought the Lightning tights in S and Run Free bra in XS. For reference, I’m a 26″ waist, 32″ bust (DD cup), 38″ hip, 5’8 tall, and standard clothing size 4.

According to the size chart, 32DD corresponds to XS, but I think otherwise for the Run Free bra. The fit of the sports bra was so tight, and the fabric so compressive, that it felt like someone was sitting on my shoulders.

For the Run Free bra, I recommend going up one on the Athleta sports bra size chart for a more comfortable yet supportive fit.

If you’re in between legging sizes on the chart, go with the size that’s within two inches of your true hip and waist measurements.

Based on the Athleta size chart, I could wear an XS and S, because the measurements are within the range I mentioned above. But I went with the Lightning Tights in S because I’m actually a 4/6 in US standard clothing sizes, so that made more sense. I probably should have used this same logic for the Run Free Bra.

Athleta Supersonic Sizing Tip:

I strongly recommend going with the size chart for the Lightning Tights. However, you may want to size up for the Run Free bra. The supersonic fabric is super compressive so consider sizing up if you want a more relaxed fit.

What I’d Improve

  1. Fit: Although the Lightning tights are described as high-waisted, these leggings actually have a mid-rise fit. I couldn’t pull the leggings as high up as I wanted to, which caused bunching in the crotch area.
  2. Bra sizing: The cup fits perfectly my girls, but everything else felt wrong. The band and straps fit too tightly.

How To Care For Your Athleta Lightning Tights and Run Free Bra

Your activewear fabric needs more TLC than regular clothing because of the engineering that goes into creating performance wear. Follow the care instructions on your Athleta Lightning tights and Run Free sports bra to allow them to withstand the test of time!

Avoid excess heat from washing in hot water, tumble-drying or ironing as this can affect the strength of the fibers and degrade the fabric features. Instead, wash in cold water and use a clothing rack or opt for a low-heat tumble-dry setting.

Also, air-dry your Athleta activewear before your next laundry day to prevent the odor-causing bacteria from destroying your precious activewear fabric. See all the ways you can keep your activewear in perfect condition here!
